Development Teams from Avon, Bayer Healthcare, Estee Lauder, Kraft, The VitaminShoppe and More Attended

PHOENIX —More than 3,500 industry executives from dietary supplement, food and beverage, cosmetic and personal care, and pharmaceutical companies gathered April 28 to 30 at the Meadowlands Exposition Center in Secaucus, N.J., for SupplySide East. The event drew 3,521 participants, and the exhibit hall included 255 companies, up from 248 in 2007.

“The exhibit hall was abuzz this year, and the aisles were filled with the world’s leading supplement, food/beverage and cosmetic/personal care manufacturers. I spoke with exhibitors and attendees who said this was the best SupplySide East in recent years,” said Peggy Jackson, director of publishing for the Health & Nutrition Division at Virgo Publishing. “Professionals from Cadbury Schweppes, Campbell Soup Co., Coca-Cola, Colgate-Palmolive, Coty, Country Life, Dannon, Frito Lay, Hartz Mountain, Herbalife International, Hershey, Johnson & Johnson, Lancome, L’Oreal, NBTY, Pepsi, Schiff Nutrition, Shisheido, Vitamin Shoppe, Wyeth Consumer Healthcare and many other powerhouses attended the event.”

The Golf Classic, co-sponsored by Marco HI-TECH and INSIDER., kicked off SupplySide East on April 28 at the members-only Green Brook Country Club. More than 90 golfers braved the rainy conditions for nine holes and a luncheon afterwards. Trophies were awarded to the top three teams, as well as for the longest drive and closest-to-the-pin.

“We encountered some adverse weather conditions at the lush Greenbrook Country Club. Nevertheless, the well-attended golf outing was shortened in an effort to maintain the upbeat attitude of all attendees, setting the stage for a positive and productive trade show. Marco’s David Garner noted, “The unfavorable weather conditions are indicative of the current business climate, but everyone adapted in an encouraging manner.”

On April 29, inside cosmeceuticals magazine hosted the first-ever Cosmeceuticals Day at SupplySide East. Cosmetic and personal care manufacturers attended a half-day workshop, discussing market research and regulatory issues presented by L’Oreal’s legal counsel, The Benchmarking Company’s Research Director and Datamonitor’s Consumer Markets Division. After the workshop, participants toured the exhibit hall.

“It was a great show, very informative,” said Debbie Hagopian from L’Oreal USA’s research and development team.

The exhibit hall opened on April 29 at noon and held more than 3,500 participants, including more exhibiting companies than previous years. Thousands of executives walked the exhibit hall until 5:30 p.m. on April 29 and again from noon to 4:30 p.m. on April 30.

“The 2008 show was especially productive for Kyowa Hakko USA; foot traffic at the booth was up, and the quality of our attendee experience was solid. We look forward to following through on the dialog started at the show,” said Neil Sullivan, director of sales, Nutrition, Kyowa Hakko USA.

Networking events offered participants additional opportunities to build new business relationships and meet with industry peers. New in 2008, all participants were invited to an INSIDER-sponsored Happy Hour on April 28 after the education program ended.  The Opening Reception, held in the exhibit hall from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on April 29, was co-sponsored by Kemin’s Welcose™ and Food Product Design. The Appreciation Party closed the three-day event with food and beverages on the exhibit floor the afternoon of April 30 and was co-sponsored by Albion Human Nutrition and inside cosmeceuticals.

The Education Program, sponsored by EPAXAS, offered three days of scientific research, marketing strategies and regulatory updates. Vasilios H. Frankos, Ph.D., director of the Division of Dietary Supplement Programs (DDSP), FDA, was the Featured Speaker on April 30. Frankos discussed FDA’s adverse reaction reporting system for dietary supplements and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs). Speakers from American Botanical Council, American Herbal Products Association (AHPA), BASF, Capsugel, Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), Drexel University, Georgetown University Medical Center, Innova market Insights, Natural Products Association (NPA), Ullman, Shapiro & Ullman, LLP, U.S Pharmacopeia and many more organizations presented.

The VendorWorks program on April 29 offered participants a variety of company-specific sessions, including presentations on ingredient science, manufacturing information, formulation knowledge, marketing insight and much more.
