Nanotechnology Applications and Safety Considerations for Personal Care and Cosmeceuticals
Nanotechnology continues to gain momentum within the personal care
and cosmeceutical industries. For those working within these sectors,
this session will unfold the concept of nanotechnology and its
manufacturing advantages. The objectives of this session are to acquaint
the audience with a basic understanding of nanotechnology as applied to
cosmetics and personal care products, discuss how cosmetics/cosmeceuticals
are regulated and, identify safety considerations to stay within the
boundaries of FDA’s stated aims for this category of products. Learn
about potential pitfalls associated with the use of nano-sized particles
(NSPs) and the possible response by regulators to this new science, as
well as what new regulations may result. The session will also cover
how, on the nano scale, a change in the basic physics governing
molecules allows for newly found properties to be exploited. In
addition, it will address the absence of a statutory definition for
cosmeceuticals and how a claim can inadvertently transform a product
into a drug. Attendees will walk away with a basic understanding of
nanotechnology as applied to cosmetics and personal care products, a
stronger knowledge of how cosmetics/cosmeceuticals are regulated, and a
deeper insight into the safety considerations associated with
maintaining the boundaries of FDA’s stated aims for this category of
products.
Speaker:
